You must have administrative privileges to run Sqlbolsetup.msi. ----------------------- 1.1 System Requirements ----------------------- SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated) is a collection of HTML Help documents that requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later. It is highly recommended that you install Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 (Internet Explorer 6.0 can be downloaded from http://microsoft.com/ie). Books Online is supported on these operating systems: * Microsoft Windows Server 2003 * Microsoft Windows XP * Microsoft Windows 2000 * Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 5 or later * Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition * Microsoft Windows 98 * Microsoft Windows 95 If you want to use Books Online on Windows 95, you must have HTML Help 1.3 or later. You can update HTML Help by downloading the latest version from http://www.microsoft.com. The HTML Help update file is named Hhupd.exe. SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated) is installed by Sqlbolsetup.msi. Sqlbolsetup.msi is a Windows Installer package that requires Windows Installer 2.0. If you do not have Windows Installer on your computer, Sqlbolsetup.msi will install version 2.0. If you have a previous version of Windows Installer on your computer, Sqlbolsetup.msi will update that version. In both cases, you will be prompted to restart your computer. You must run Sqlbolsetup.msi again after your computer restarts to complete installation of SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated). --------------------------- 1.2 Disk Space Requirements --------------------------- SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated) requires 35 megabytes (MB) of free disk space. The first time you use the index in Books Online, an index file is generated, which requires an additional 5 MB of disk space. ----------------------------------------------------- 1.3 Downloading, Extracting, and Installing the Files ----------------------------------------------------- Download Sqlbolsetup.msi following the instructions on the download page. Install SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated) by double-clicking Sqlbolsetup.msi and following the instructions provided by Setup. You can run two copies of the SQL Server 2000 Books Online on one computer: * One copy that was originally installed with an instance of SQL Server, which is started from the Books Online shortcut in the SQL Server program group. This is the copy of Books Online that contains the F1 Help material for the SQL Server utilities. * A stand-alone copy whose shortcut is not in the SQL Server program group. If Setup detects an existing copy of the SQL Server 2000 Books Online, you are prompted whether you want to upgrade that copy of Books Online. When you specify that Setup install a new stand-alone copy of SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated), you must also specify the folder in which you want the copy installed. You should use the default folder chosen by the setup program if possible. If you must specify another folder, make sure: * The folder does not contain an existing copy of SQL Server 2000 Books Online. * The folder path does not include any Unicode characters that are not a part of a Windows code page. If you have installed Books Online from the SQL Server product CD, from a previous Books Online update download, or from both, you can overwrite one or both of the existing versions when you download this version of Books Online (Updated) for 2004. If you have the installed the product release version of Books Online from a previously available Web download rather than the product CD, that stand-alone version of Books Online is ignored by the setup for SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated). No changes are be made to that version. You can only overwrite a previously installed version of Books Online with an updated version that is in the same language. For example, you can overwrite a French copy of Books Online with a French copy of the updated Books Online. However, you cannot overwrite a Spanish copy of Books Online with a French copy of the updated version of Books Online. If you have installed the existing version of Books Online from the product CD, or have replaced the version of Books Online from the product CD with the previous Books Online update, and you overwrite that installed version with this version of Books Online updated for 2004, all F1 Help calls from SQL Server 2000 display SQL Server Books Online (Updated) for 2004. Do not install more than one DBCS version of Books Online on the same computer, unless both versions use the same language. For example, do not install a Korean version of Books Online on the same computer with a Japanese version of Books Online. The downloadable version of Books Online cannot be run from a folder that contains pure Unicode characters in the path name. A pure Unicode character does not have an equivalent ANSI or OEM code-page mapping. Because the pure Unicode character cannot be mapped to an ANSI or OEM code page, it is converted to "?" and therefore prevents access to the path. Pure Unicode languages include Indian languages (such as Tamil and Devanagari), Armenian, and Georgian scripts; and some pure Unicode characters can be found in East Asian scripts. On Windows 2000, you might receive a message prompting you to install new fonts when you open Books Online for the first time. If so, you must close and reopen Books Online to see the new fonts. If you want to install an earlier update of Books Online (that is, version 8.0.0.0 or 8.1.0.0) on a computer already containing a stand-alone installation of Books Online (Updated) for 2004 (version 8.2.0.0), you must first uninstall Books Online (Updated) for 2004 if it is installed in the default directory. The default directory is: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Books Online\ where is the language ID of the Books Online installation. -------------------------- 1.4 Canceling Installation -------------------------- If the previous Books Online (Updated) is installed on your computer and you cancel the installation of SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated) for 2004, that previous version of Books Online is left in an inconsistent state. You must either rerun and complete the installation of SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated) for 2004 or run the installer for the previous Books Online (Updated), and then click Repair. *************************************************************** 2.0 Running SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated) *************************************************************** If you used Sqlbolsetup.msi to upgrade an existing copy of SQL Server 2000 Books Online that was originally installed during the installation of an instance of SQL Server 2000, the SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated) replaces the previous version and is run using the same steps that were used for the previous version: On the Start menu, click All Programs, select Microsoft SQL Server, and then click Books Online. If you used Sqlbolsetup.msi to install a stand-alone copy of SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated) for 2004 or to upgrade an existing stand-alone copy of the Books Online, a new shortcut is created to start the updated Books Online: On the Start menu, click All Programs, then click Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated - 2004). If you install SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated) for 2004 on a computer that does not have SQL Server 2000 installed, double-clicking Sql80xx.col does not open Books Online. *************************************************************** 3.0 SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated) Functionality Notes *************************************************************** These are issues that relate to the functionality of SQL Server 2000 Books Online. --------------------------- 3.1 HTML Help Error Message --------------------------- When you install the downloaded version of SQL Server 2000 Books Online to a computer running Windows 2000 or later version, the following error message might appear: HTML Help is a Windows system component and can only be updated via a service pack on this version of Windows. If this message appears, click Accept. The message indicates that the version of HTML Help included in the Books Online installation is already installed on the computer. ------------------------ 3.2 Printing Limitations ------------------------ If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5, printing with the Print the selected headings and all subtopics option is not recommended. If you are using Internet Explorer 5.0 or Internet Explorer 5.5, linked topics may not always print when the Print all linked documents option is selected in the Print dialog box. -------------------- 3.3 Enabling F1 Help -------------------- If SQL Server Books Online has never been installed from the product CD, installing SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated) will not provide F1 Help in the SQL Server tools. For F1 Help, install Books Online from the product CD, and then update it with SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated). ------------------------------------- 3.4 Impaired Expand/Collapse Behavior ------------------------------------- Expand/collapse links may not function correctly in any version of SQL Server Books Online if you have installed recent Windows updates. This unintended behavior is the result of the changes applied by the updates, and will be corrected in future Windows updates. --------------------------------- 3.5 Script Errors with Windows 98 --------------------------------- If you are using Internet Explorer 5.0 on a computer running Windows 98, you might encounter an error when using the keyboard shortcuts icon from the toolbar. You might also encounter an error when the home page loads. It is highly recommended that you upgrade to Internet Explorer 6.0 for best performance. Internet Explorer 6.0 can be downloaded from http://microsoft.com/ie. *************************************************************** 4.0 Uninstalling SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated) *************************************************************** To uninstall SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated), in Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs, click Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated), and then click Remove. On Windows NT 4.0, Windows 95, or Windows 98, do not uninstall Books Online by manually deleting the files from the installation directory. If you do manually delete the files in this directory, download Sqlbolsetup.msi again (if necessary) and run Sqlbolsetup.msi to reinstall SQL Server 2000 Books Online (Updated) for 2004; and then uninstall Books Online as described above.
