This file provides information required to install and use the BrightStor ARCserve Backup Agent for Mac OS X. This file can help you with your implementation of the product and provides installation information, system requirements, and information on contacting Technical Support. ______________________________________________________________________ 2.0 Operating System Support The Agent for Mac OS X supports the following operating systems. * Apple PowerMac G4/G5 (Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3, 10.4) * Apple X Server (Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3, 10.4) For more information about support for newer versions of the operating systems in the following list, contact Technical Support at http://ca.com/support. ______________________________________________________________________ 3.0 Installation Requirements The following sections provide information about the minimum requirements necessary to install the agent. ______________________________________________________________________ 3.1 Hardware Requirements You must satisfy the following minimum hardware requirements to install the agent: * 10 MB Hard Disk Space * 128 MB RAM ______________________________________________________________________ 3.2 System Shared Memory To optimize agent performance on various operating systems, we recommend increasing the default shared memory segment size (SHMMAX). The suggested minimum SHMMAX value is 1048576. * For Mac OS X 10.2, the values are located in file /System/Library/StartupItems/SystemTuning/SystemTuning * For Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4, the values are located in file /etc/rc For optimal performance, use the following configuration: * sysctl -w kern.sysv.shmmax=167772160 * sysctl -w kern.sysv.shmmin=1 * sysctl -w kern.sysv.shmmni=32 * sysctl -w kern.sysv.shmseg=8 * sysctl -w kern.sysv.shmall=65536 Note: You must reboot your computer for the changes to take effect. ______________________________________________________________________ 4.0 Package Names and Locations You can find the agent installation package for Mac OS X, MacOSX.tar.Z, in the Mac folder of the installation CD. ______________________________________________________________________ 5.0 Installing the Agent To install the agent, you must transfer the installation file to the target Mac OS X machine and complete the installation procedure. The following sections provide information to help you install the agent. ______________________________________________________________________ 5.1 Transferring the Installation File to the Target Mac OS X Host The following procedure transfers the installation file from a Windows-based computer to the target Mac OS X host: 1. At the command prompt, log in to the Mac OS X host as root, as in the following: ftp host 2. Enter the following command to enable the binary transfer mode: bin 3. Create a directory on the Mac OS X host, if necessary, using the following command: mkdir dir 4. Change the directory to an installation directory on the Mac OS X host: cd dir 5. Enter the following command to transfer the files to the Mac OS X host: put file 6. Enter the following command to end your ftp session: quit Installing the Agent on the Mac OS X Host To install the agent on the Mac OS X host, perform the following procedure: 1. At the command prompt, log in to the Mac OS X host as root: telnet host 2. Change to the directory containing the installation file and extract the files, as in the following example: cd /dir zcat file | tar xvf - 3. Enter the following command to install the agent: ./install ______________________________________________________________________ 6.0 Using the Agent Use the following commands to check the status of, start, and stop the agent. * To check the status of the Agent for Mac OS X, enter the following command: # uagent status * To start the Agent for Mac OS X, enter the following command: # uagent start Note: If either of these commands fail, you can run the following script to configure the agent: # uagenthome/uagentsetup where uagenthome is one of the following: /opt/uagent /usr/BABuagent * To stop the Agent for Mac OS X, enter the following command: # uagent stop Note: The agent cannot perform backup and restore operations of Mac OS X systems when it is not running. The root user must log in to stop the agent. ______________________________________________________________________ 7.0 Removing the Agent To uninstall the agent from the system, you must log in as the Superuser (root user). We recommend that you use the standard method provided by the operating system to remove the agent from your system.
