For information about supported operating systems included with BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.5, see Operating System Support for BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.5 Client Agents and Enterprise Options. ______________________________________________________________________ 4.0 Cross-Platform Oracle RMAN Support This release provides the following cross-platform Oracle RMAN enhancements: * Oracle RMAN staging backup jobs can now back up multiple Oracle database instances on UNIX/Linux servers in a single job. * Oracle RMAN staging backup jobs now support media maximization Oracle RMAN staging backup jobs now support media maximization (Fix T59E008/QO87647 introduced this enhancement). This media maximization support is for all job types, including Oracle. * Additional Oracle RMAN options (for cross platforms) have been added to the Backup Manager. Note: The BrightStor ARCserve Backup cross-platform Oracle RMAN enhancement should also work with the UNIX/Linux Agent for Oracle on the r11.5 SP3 level. ______________________________________________________________________ 4.1 Using the new cross-platform Oracle RMAN Enhancements When browsing the Advanced Oracle Backup Options of the Agent for Oracle on UNIX/Linux servers in the Backup Manager, three new options are available for each Oracle database instance: Note: For r11.5 SP4, BrightStor ARCserve Backup provides cross-platform support for Oracle RMAN. For detailed information about the operating system support for Oracle RMAN, see the Operating Systems Support for BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.5 SP4 Client Agents and Enterprise Options section of this readme. * Fail the job if number of copies is more than 1 and many drives are not available: If this option is selected, the backup job fails when the number of copies is more than 1 and the job cannot gain access to enough devices to support them. If this option is not selected, the backup job continues to run when the number of copies is more than 1 and the number of devices is insufficient. However, the number of copies is reduced. * Device availability waiting time (minutes): This allows you to specify how long you want a backup job to wait if it is unable to access the number of devices it requires. After the time you specify expires, the job fails or it continues if you enabled the option "Continue backup even if some requested devices are not available" option. * Continue backup even if some requested devices are not available: If this option is selected and the job has at least one device assigned, the job continues to run. If this option is not selected, the job fails when it cannot access enough devices within the time specified in the option Device availability waiting time (minutes). Notes * When registering the Agent for Oracle machine within the BrightStor ARCserve Backup Manager, the Oracle user only needs to enter the actual hostname for the machine. The hostname can be accessed by running the "hostname" command from the command line on the machine where the Agent for Oracle is installed. * Increasing the amount of channels selected increases the amount of system resources. Before increasing the channels, make sure there are enough system resources available to handle the increased amount of channels. * After an Oracle RMAN staging backup job fails or is canceled, some of the media used in this job may be reserved and unavailable for several minutes. During this time, the File System Device Group Configuration dialog is disabled and a new job cannot use the media reserved in the job. You need to wait a minimum of 5 minutes before launching a new Oracle RMAN backup job. * The "Create makeup jobs to back up data to final destination under disk full conditions" option will be ignored when performing an Oracle RMAN staging backup job. This option is located on the miscellaneous tab of the Staging Policy dialog. When a backup job fails due to full disk condition or the threshold limit is reached, a makeup job will be created to back up the data directly to the final destination media. For Oracle RMAN staging backup jobs, the makeup job will be created only when Retry Missed Targets option is selected and the makeup job will still be a disk staging job. * For GFS and Rotation ORACLE RMAN staging backup jobs, the Staging "Disabled" configuration option in the "Rotation Rules" tab will be ignored. * The following new Oracle RMAN messages have been added, but will not appear in the online help: Note: For more detailed information about each of these new messages, see the Documentation Known Issues section of this readme. o Error E3725: "Oracle RMAN agent prior to r11.5 SP3 is not supported." o Warning W3726: "Set the default device availability waiting time to minutes." o Warning W3727: "Reduce the number of copies to one." o Warning W3728: "Reduce the number of channels to ." o Error E3729: "Can not get enough media for Oracle RMAN agent!" o Error E3730:"Can not get agent version. Oracle RMAN agent below R11.5 SP3 is not supported. Skip the RMAN agent." o Error E3906: "Oracle RMAN agent below R11.5 SP3 is not supported! Skip the RMAN agent." * When registering an Agent for Oracle, the Oracle user on a UNIX server must be given the equivalence of caroot on the Windows server where the base product is installed, with the following command: ca_auth [-cahost BABhost] -equiv add caroot [caroot_username] [caroot_password] After running this command on the server side, the following error still appears in the activity log during a backup job: failed to authenticate user oracle. Please create a caroot equivalency using ca_auth.> If this error is generated, you need to use the ca_auth utility to add an equivalence for the current user. The following is an example of the ca_auth command you need to run on the Oracle agent server to add a "caroot" equivalence for user "oracle" on Oracle agent server "abc123": [root@abc123 BABoraagt]# ./ca_auth -cahost babserver -equiv add oracle abc123 caroot caroot caroot_password [root@abc123 BABoraagt]# ./ca_auth -cahost babserver -equiv getequiv oracle abc123 Equivalent BrightStor user for oracle@abc123:caroot ______________________________________________________________________ 5.0 General Considerations for BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.5 SP4 Client Agents and Enterprise Options The following section provides general information to consider when using BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Windows. As a result, the BrightStor ARCserve Backup Client Agent for Windows does not support operations (such as backup, restore, compare, and so on) that require the IPX protocol on Windows Vista systems. * Microsoft Windows Vista (32-bit and x64) platforms include a feature called Bitlocker that lets you perform volume level encryption. However, Windows Vista does not provide an API that facilitates reading and writing data in an encrypted format. As a result, BrightStor ARCserve Backup writes backed up data relating to Windows Vista platforms in an unencrypted format only. * The BrightStor ARCserve Backup Agent Admin window has been enhanced to display up to 32 connections simultaneously. ______________________________________________________________________ 13.0 Known Issues for BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.5 SP3 Client Agents and Enterprise Options * Backup jobs may fail when the source files, directories, or both contain special characters in their name (for example, ?, È, ?, and Ø). To remedy this problem, select the parent directory to the files that contain special characters as the source for your backup job. Ensure that the parent directory contains no special characters and then submit the job. ______________________________________________________________________ 14.0 BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.5 SP1 and SP2 Client Agents and Enterprise Options The following sections provide information originally released with the BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.5 SP1 and SP2 Client Agents and Enterprise Options CD and included in this release of BrightStor ARCserve Backup. For information originally released with BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.5 and included in this release of BrightStor ARCserve Backup, see the section Known Issues for BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.5. ______________________________________________________________________ 19.1 Known Issues for the Client Agent for Windows The following issues related to the Client Agent for Windows are known to exist in this release: * When you restore sessions backed up with the 32-bit Client Agent for Windows to a machine running the 64-bit Client Agent for Windows, encrypted sessions cannot be restored. ______________________________________________________________________ 19.2 Known Issues for the Agent for Oracle (Windows) The following issues related to the BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Windows Agent for Oracle are known to exist in this release: * If you use WORM media as the destination for any cross-platform jobs involving the BrightStor ARCserve Backup for UNIX Agent for Oracle or the BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Linux Agent for Oracle, these agents may not behave as expected. Child jobs are submitted by the agent, and, because WORM media is not supported on the UNIX or Linux agents, these child jobs may use destinations other than the WORM media. ______________________________________________________________________ 19.3 Known Issues for the Agent for Oracle (UNIX) The following issues related to the BrightStor ARCserve Backup for UNIX Agent for Oracle are known to exist in this release: * The Restore by Media and Restore by Session options are not supported for this release. * You cannot back up multiple Oracle instances in the same job. * You cannot mix Oracle instance backups and other backup types (for example file system backup or any other database type backup). * Due to a known issue with Oracle, if you are using Oracle 8.1.6 32-bit on AIX 4.3.3, you may encounter difficulty restoring a successfully created backup because RMAN fails to accurately recognize the backup. You can, however, restore your data using an older backup. Therefore, we recommend that you periodically run a validate operation on your backups to ensure that you have a prior backup from which to restore. If you reduce the block size and run the backup again, you may be able to enable the restore operation (although no specific valid value has been determined). * The Smart Restore functionality is not supported for the Agent for Oracle. * Merge operations on file system devices containing Oracle backup sessions are not supported for this release. * You must supply the correct host name when registering Agent for Oracle nodes in the BrightStor ARCserve Backup database. * The agent does not support session passwords. * You must use an RMAN Catalog to run jobs with the Oracle option Include Control File Oracle option enabled from the Oracle Restore Manager. If you enabled the control file autobackup feature for the target database before using the Agent for Oracle, use your own RMAN scripts to restore an autobackup of the control file. For more information, see the . * Compare Media to Disk is not supported on Agent for Oracle sessions. * If you select multiple channels to back up, you must have available, at minimum, the same number of device groups as channels and you must select the Any Group option in the GUI. ______________________________________________________________________ 19.4 Known Issues for the Agent for Oracle (Linux) The following issues related to the BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Linux Agent for Oracle are known to exist in this release: * You cannot back up multiple Oracle instances in the same job. * You cannot mix Oracle instance backups and other backup types (for example, file system backup or any other database type backup). * This release of BrightStor ARCserve Backup cannot restore data backed up with the BrightStor(R) ARCserve(R) Backup version 9.0 Agent for Oracle. * Merge operations on file system devices containing Oracle backup sessions are not supported for this release. However, merge operations with tapes containing Oracle backup sessions are successful. * The agent does not support session passwords. * Backup with Compare is not supported on Agent for Oracle sessions. ______________________________________________________________________ 20.0 International Support for BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.5 SP1 and SP2 Client Agents and Enterprise Options An product is an English product that runs correctly on local language versions of the required operating system and required third-party products, and supports local language data for input and output. If you make changes to one, you must make the same changes to the other, or the components may not be able to contact one another. * You cannot use the Client Agent for NetWare included in this release with the BrightStor ARCserve Backup for NetWare r11.1 Manager. The Client Agent for NetWare included in this release requires the BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Windows r11.5 Manager GUI. * When running the Client Agent for NetWare on NetWare 4.2, the agent requires the clibaux.nlm enhancement module provided by Novell (refer to Novell Technical Information Document 2955000). * When a full NetWare machine is selected for backup, the NDS session is not backed up. You must explicitly select the NDS session and other volumes to be backed up. * The Client Agent for NetWare handles only one job at a time. If a backup job includes the NetWare volume and NDS of the same node, it creates two nodes for the job in the job package, and, because multiplexing or multistreaming jobs create two jobs for the NetWare node and the two jobs run simultaneously, the agent rejects the second job. * The NetWare Services branch has been removed from the Network tree in the Backup and Restore Managers. To back up a NetWare machine from the BrightStor ARCserve Backup host, you must install the Client Agent for NetWare on the machine. * Whole node backup operations are not supported with the Client Agent for AS400. ______________________________________________________________________ 27.0 Documentation for BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11.5 Each guide in a documentation set has a unique Document Identification (DID) designation that appears on the title page of the guide.
