1. About Client Agent for Windows NT
The Client Agent for Windows NT uses the Push Agent technology to accomplish backup, restore and compare jobs. Please refer to Chapter 15 in the ARCserve for Windows NT Users Guide on how the Client Agents work with ARCserve.
Client Agent for Windows NT uses the IPX/SPX or TCP/IP protocol. Either one of the following two transports must be installed before you can run Client Agent for Windows NT:
* The NetWare* Link (NWLink) transport or
* TCP/IP transport
For more information about the transport and its parameters, refer to the Windows NT User's Guide.
2. Installing the Client Agent for Windows NT
From the workstation where you are going to install the Client Agent, run SETUP.EXE . You will be prompted to choose where the Client Agent will be installed.
A Common group "ARCserve Client Agent for Windows NT" is created with three icons:
"Client Agent for Windows NT Admin"
"Client Agent Release Notes"
"Uninstall NT Client Agent"
3. Using the Client Agent for Windows NT Admin
The Client Agent for Windows NT Admin allows you to view the current activity of the Agent, as well as provide you with IPX and TCP/IP addresses. You will also be able to view the connections made to the NT Agent.
The CONFIGURATION button will allow you to configure the agent service. You will find the following options:
System Security
The Client Agent service will use the Windows NT Security to perform backup, compare and restore operations. The agent will impersonate the logged on user. When you specify the account to use, it may be necessary to distinguish between two accounts with the same name (such as Administrator) by indicating where Windows NT can find this account. To do this, specify the domain or machine that the account is part of as domain_name\user_name or machine_name\user_name. As an example, for a domain named NTDEV containing a workstation named ENGINEER, the respective administrators are
NTDEV\Administrator
ENGINEER\Administrator
Password Security
You can set individual passwords for security. This will allow the agent to run under the local system account. By default, the Password Security is disabled.
Specify IP Address
You can specify different IP address for the agent to bind with. The specified IP address should
be a valid one on the Windows NT machine.
Pre / Post Operations
You can configure batch programs to run prior to and after a backup operation.
The SERVICES button will allow you to Start or Stop the Client Agent Service.
The PRIORITY button will allow you to prioritize the Client Agent for Windows NT job (Backup/Restore/Compare). Change to High or Low depending on what priority you would like to place on the Backup/Restore/Compare job.
4. Features
Data Compression Support
The Client Agent for Windows NT supports compression. When this option is selected from the ARCserve side, data packets are compressed during transport through the network.
Data Encryption Support
The data packets being transported during an ARCserve job can be encrypted. With this option selected, the transported or archived data is secured with a password.
Auto-Discovery of Client Agent
ARCserve v6.5 allows you to auto-discover all machines running the Client Agent v4.0 for Windows NT. This will allow users to "automatically" build the list of machines in the Cheyenne Agent Tree for Windows NT.
Use the following procedure to add the Client Agents:
1. In the Backup Manager, expand the Cheyenne Agents Tree.
2. Right click on the Windows NT Agents and select "Add using Auto-Discovery".
3. In the dialog box, select the machine(s) you would like to add.
4. Once complete, click on Close.
Multi-stream Restore and Compare
The Client Agent for Windows NT supports multistreaming operations. Refer to section 5: Registry Settings on how to enable this option.
Computer Name Resolution support
Under the Network tree, right click on the machine name in the ARCserve manager. Select Use Agent from the menu and select Use Computer Name Resolution. ARCserve will automatically enter 0.0.0.0 for the TCP/IP address.
Under the Cheyenne Agents tree, right click on the Windows NT Agents. Select Add Object from the menu and select Use Computer Name Resolution. ARCserve will automatically enter 0.0.0.0 for the TCP/IP address.
Security Options
When using the agent Password Security please enter the password at the node level. In the ARCserve Manager, right click on the machine name. Select Security from the menu. Then enter the password you specified for the agent.
When using System Security the agent service will use the user name and the password to log on. This user should be a valid user in the local workstation user's database or in domain database if the workstation is a member in a domain.
Support for non-default Network Interface Cards (NIC's)
To use this feature, please refer to the Specify IP Address section under Using the Client Agent for Windows NT Admin above.
Support for registry backup in detail mode
Detail mode allows registry keys and values to be captured to media and in the ARCserve Database to provide a much more granular level of backup and restore than registry hive level. This enables selective backup and restore of the registry.
By default, when the entire machine is selected for backup, Client Agent for Windows NT does NOT backup registry in detail mode. Refer to section 5: Registry Settings on how to enable this option.
Virus Scanning Support
Integrated agent level virus scanning is now supported by the Client Agent.
5. Registry Setting:
The Client Agent for Windows NT allows the user to customize the product by adding or modifying settings in the Windows NT Registry. While the more common settings can be set using the Client Agent for Windows NT Admin, there are additional settings that can be set by using the Windows NT REGEDT32 utility. The Client Agent for Windows NT settings are listed in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE window under the following key:
