  • The information in this document applies only to Windows Small Business Server 2003 with Service Pack 1, Premium Edition.

After completing Windows Small Business Server 2003 Setup, you can use the Premium Technologies disc to install Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2000 and Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004. A Microsoft FrontPage® 2003 disc is also included.

  • You can install SQL Server 2000 as your database for a business application. Additionally, you can upgrade the instance of Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (Windows) (MSDE) used by Microsoft Windows SharePoint® Services if you want to be able to search document libraries in your company's internal Web site. See Installing SQL Server 2000 later in this document.

  • You can install ISA Server 2004 as the firewall for your local network. See Installing ISA Server 2004 later in this document.

  • You can install FrontPage 2003 on one computer in the Windows Small Business Server network so that you can create or modify your Internet Web site. See Installing FrontPage 2003 later in this document.

Important

  • You must be logged on as the Administrator account or another account that is a member of the Domain Admins security group to install SQL Server 2000 or ISA Server 2004.

Installing SQL Server 2000

Using the instructions provided in this document you can upgrade the instance of WMSDE that you are using for Windows SharePoint Services, as well as install a new instance of SQL Server 2000. For instructions about how to upgrade, see To upgrade the instance of MSDE used for Windows SharePoint Services later in this document. For instructions about how to install a new instance, see To install a new instance of SQL Server 2000 later in this document.

Important

  • If you are running the Dutch, Portuguese (Brazil), or Swedish versions of Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition with Service Pack 1, and you want to upgrade the SHAREPOINT WMSDE instance to full SQL Server 2000, use the instructions in PremiumInstallSteps_loc.htm, which is located on the Premium Technologies disc and on the Microsoft Web Site at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=45059.

  • You cannot upgrade the SHAREPOINT WMSDE instance with the evaluation edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2000.

Before installing SQL Server, review the following points:

  • As part of installing each instance of SQL Server 2000, you must install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4), which addresses known security issues. To do so, follow the instructions provided later in this document.

  • Do not upgrade the instance of MSDE installed for Monitoring (SBSMONITORING), as it is not supported.

  • If you are installing a new instance of SQL Server and you have an existing SQL Server installation, or if you are installing SQL Server in a language different from the language used by the client computers connecting to the database, or if you have an application that depends on settings from a previous version of SQL Server, you must complete a custom Setup and specify collation settings. For information about collation settings, see SQL Server Collation Settings later in this document.

  • To review the SQL Server 2000 release notes, open D:\SQL2000\Readme.txt on the Premium Technologies disc, where D is the letter of your CD drive. To review the SQL Server 2000 SP4 release notes, open D:\SQL2000_SP4\ReadmeSql2k32sp4.htm on the Premium Technologies disc, where D is the letter of your CD drive.

To upgrade the instance of MSDE used for Windows SharePoint Services

  1. From the Autorun page of the Premium Technologies disc (D:\Setup.exe, where D is the letter of your CD drive), click Install Microsoft SQL Server 2000.

    Note

    • If Windows Small Business Server 2003 came preinstalled on your server, your original equipment manufacturer (OEM) may have created a shortcut on the desktop for installing the Premium Technologies.

    Important

    • If you are running the Dutch, Portuguese (Brazil), or Swedish versions of Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition with Service Pack 1, and you want to upgrade the SHAREPOINT WMSDE instance to full SQL Server 2000, use the instructions in PremiumInstallSteps_loc.htm, which is located on this disc.

  2. When the Winzip Self-Extractor - SQL2000.exe message appears, click Unzip.

  3. When the message appears that the files were unzipped successfully, click OK to continue installing SQL Server 2000.

  4. When the SQL Server 2000 SP2 and below message appears, click Continue. The issue the message describes is resolved after you install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4, which you do later in this document.

  5. On the Welcome page, click Next.

  6. On the Computer Name page, you must accept the default of Local Computer. Click Next.

  7. On the Installation Selection page, click Upgrade, remove, or add components to an existing instance of SQL Server. Click Next.

  8. If this is the first instance of SQL Server that you are installing or upgrading, the CD-Key page appears. Enter your Windows Small Business Server 2003 product key, which is found on the back of the disc case.

    Note

    • If Windows Small Business Server 2003 came preinstalled on your server, the product key is located on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA). The COA is a multicolored label located on the side or top of your computer.

  9. On the Instance Name page, clear the Default check box if it is selected. In the Instance name box, select SHAREPOINT. Click Next.

    Important

    • Do not upgrade the instance of MSDE installed for Monitoring (SBSMONITORING), as it is not supported.

  10. On the Existing Installation page, accept the default of Upgrade your existing installation.

  11. On the Upgrade page, select the Yes, upgrade my programs check box.

  12. When a message appears prompting you to install additional components, click Yes.

  13. On the Select Components page, under the SubComponents column, select the Full-Text Search check box. If this is the first instance of SQL Server that you are installing, it is recommended that you also select the Management Tools component. Additionally, to get SQL Server documentation, you must select the Books Online component.

  14. On the Start Copying Files page, click Next to begin installing SQL Server.

  15. On the Setup Complete page, click Finish.

  16. You must now continue to the next procedure to apply SQL Server SP4 to the instance of SQL Server that you just installed.

To install SP4 to the SHAREPOINT instance of SQL Server

  1. From the Autorun page of the Premium Technologies disc (D:\Setup.exe, where D is the letter of your CD drive), click Install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4.

    Note

    • When you run SP4 Setup, if you receive a message that the Scm.exe file is in use, restart your server, and then begin installing SP4.

  2. When the Winzip Self-Extractor - SQL2000_SP4.exe message appears, click Unzip.

  3. When the message appears that the files were unzipped successfully, click OK to continue installing SQL Server 2000 SP4.

  4. On the Welcome page, click Next.

  5. On the Software License Agreement page, review the licensing agreement. To continue, you must accept the agreement.

  6. On the Instance Name page, clear the Default check box if it is selected. In the Instance name box, select SHAREPOINT. Click Next.

    Note

    • If you receive one of the following error messages after selecting the SHAREPOINT instance in the Instance name box and clicking Next, you must upgrade the SHAREPOINT WMSDE instance to full SQL Server 2000, and then you must run the SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4 Setup again:

      "SHAREPOINT is not a SQL Server 2000 instance. Setup will now exit."

      "SQL Server 2000 is not installed on this machine. Setup will now exit."

  7. On the Connect to Server page, accept the default of The Windows account information I use to log on to my computer with (Windows authentication) unless you specified a different authentication mode in the previous procedure. Click Next.

  8. When the message appears telling you that the SA password is blank, it is recommended that you provide a strong password for this account. A strong password is between 6 and 127 characters long, and it uses uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and other characters, such as *, ?, and $.

    Note

    • The System Administrator (SA) is a special SQL Server account that is provided for backward compatibility. By default, it is assigned to the Sysadmin Fixed Server role and cannot be changed.

  9. If you receive the Backward Compatibility Checklist message, and you must modify the SP4 security enhancements, select the appropriate options. For details about each option, click Help. Click Continue after you have reviewed the security enhancements.

  10. When the Error Reporting message appears, you can select Automatically send fatal error reports to Microsoft, and then click OK.

  11. On the Start Copy Files page, click Next.

  12. When a message appears prompting you to back up your databases, click OK. It is highly recommended that you complete a backup after installing Premium Technologies.

  13. On the Setup Complete page, click Finish. Restart your computer if you are prompted to do so.

  14. Ensure the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service is started. To do so, click Start, click Run, and then type Services.msc. If the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service is not started, right-click the service, and then click Start.

    Notes

    • If you encounter an error while trying to upgrade the instance of SHAREPOINT, ensure that the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service is stopped. To do so, click Start, click Run, and then type Services.msc. If the service is not stopped, right-click the service name, and then click Stop. After the upgrade is complete, you must ensure that the service restarts.

    • By default, MSDE 2000 SP4 is automatically applied to the instances of SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE) that were installed during Windows Small Business Server 2003 Setup, including the Monitoring (SBSMONITORING) MSDE instance, and the Windows SharePoint Services (SHAREPOINT) WMSDE instance.

      Additionally, if you have the Premium Edition of Windows SBS 2003, and you have installed ISA 2004, MSDE SP4 is automatically applied to the ISA Server 2004 Firewall (MSFW) MSDE instance. In addition, if you are running instances of SQL Server 2000, SQL Server SP4 is made available for you to install.

To turn on full-text search in Windows SharePoint Services

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click SharePoint Central Administration.

  2. In Component Configuration, click Configure full-text search.

  3. Select the Enable full-text search and index component check box, and then click OK.

To install a new instance of SQL Server 2000

  1. From the Autorun page of the Premium Technologies disc (D:\Setup.exe, where D is the letter of your CD drive), click Install Microsoft SQL Server 2000.

    Note

    • If Windows Small Business Server 2003 came preinstalled on your server, your original equipment manufacturer (OEM) may have created a shortcut on the desktop for installing the Premium Technologies.

  2. When the Winzip Self-Extractor - SQL2000.exe message appears, click Unzip.

  3. When the message appears that the files were unzipped successfully, click OK to continue installing SQL Server 2000.

  4. When the SQL Server 2000 SP2 and below message appears, click Continue. The issue is resolved after you install SQL Server 2000 SP4 later in this document.

  5. On the Welcome page, click Next.

  6. On the Computer Name page, accept the default of Local Computer. Click Next.

  7. On the Installation Selection page, click Create a new instance of SQL Server, or install Client Tools. Click Next.

  8. On the User Information page, click Next to accept the default information.

  9. On the Software License Agreement page, review the licensing agreement. To continue, you must accept the agreement.

  10. If this is the first instance of SQL Server that you are installing, the CD-Key page appears. Enter your Windows Small Business Server 2003 product key, which is found on the back of the disc case. Click Next.

    Note

    • If Windows Small Business Server 2003 came preinstalled on your server, the product key is located on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA). The COA is a multicolored label located on the side or top of your computer.

  11. On the Installation Definition page, accept the default of Server and Client Tools. Click Next.

  12. On the Instance Name page, accept the default of Default or create a specific named instance. Click Next.

  13. On the Setup Type page, accept the default of Typical, unless you need to use specific collation settings or other specific SQL Server installation options.

    You can also specify where to install the program and data files. It is recommended that you choose a drive that has enough free disk space to support folder growth. If you have multiple drives on your server, it is recommended that you save your data to a drive other than the one where the operating system is installed. Storing data on a separate drive improves system performance and simplifies backup and recovery.

    You must perform a custom Setup and specify collation settings (rather than using the default values) if: (1) you have an existing SQL Server installation, (2) you are installing SQL Server in a language different from the language used by the client computers connecting to the database, or (3) you have an application that depends on settings from a previous version of SQL Server. To perform a custom Setup, click Custom on the Setup Type page, and then follow the instructions.

    For more information about collation settings, see SQL Server Collation Settings later in this document.

  14. On the Services Accounts page, you can use the default of Use a Domain User account, and then specify the password for your administrator account. Optionally, an even more secure method is to create a new account specifically for accessing SQL Server.

    To create a new account for SQL Server, use the Add User Wizard in Server Management. Click Start, click Server Management, and then click Users. In the details pane, click Add a user. When prompted for the template selection, select Do not use a template to define user settings, and then specify Administrators for the security group membership. Do not select the options to create a computer or allocate disk space.

    Note

    • If you enabled password policies for the domain, the password for the services account expires when a password reset is required for all users. You must reset the services account password and then update the password for SQL Server. You must also update the account information if you manually change the user name or password for the account.

      To reset the services account password, use the Change User Password task on the Manage Users taskpad in Server Management. To update the password for SQL Server, click Start, click Run, and then type Services.msc. Double-click the MSSQLServer service, click the Log On tab, and then update the account information. Then update the account information for the SQLSERVERAGENT service.

  15. On the Authentication Mode page, accept the default of Windows Authentication Mode. Click Next.

  16. On the Start Copying Files page, click Next to begin the installation of SQL Server.

  17. On the Setup Complete page, click Finish.

  18. You must now continue to the next procedure to apply SQL Server SP4 to the instance of SQL Server that you just installed.

To install SP4 to the new instance of SQL Server

  1. From the Autorun page of the Premium Technologies disc (D:\Setup.exe, where D is the letter of your CD drive), click Install SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 4.

    Note

    • When you run SP4 Setup, if you receive a message that the Scm.exe file is in use, restart your server, and then begin installing SP4.

  2. When the Winzip Self-Extractor - SQL2000_SP4.exe message appears, click Unzip.

  3. When the message appears that the files were unzipped successfully, click OK to continue installing SQL Server 2000 SP4.

  4. On the Welcome page, click Next.

  5. On the Software License Agreement page, review the licensing agreement. To continue, you must accept the agreement.

  6. On the Instance Name page, accept the default of Default unless in the previous procedure you specified an instance name. Click Next.

  7. On the Connect to Server page, accept the default of The Windows account name I use to log on to my computer with (Windows authentication) unless you specified a different authentication mode in the previous procedure.

  8. When the message that the SA password is blank appears, it is recommended that you provide a strong password for this account. A strong password is between 6 and 127 characters, and uses uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and other characters, such as *, ?, and $.

  9. Review the Backward Compatibility Checklist message. If you must modify the SP4 security enhancements, select the appropriate options. For details about each option, click Help. Click Continue after you have reviewed the security enhancements.

  10. When the Error Reporting message appears, you can select Automatically send failed error reports to Microsoft.

  11. On the Start Copy Files page, click Next.

  12. When a message appears prompting you to back up your databases, click OK. It is highly recommended that you complete a backup after installing Premium Technologies

  13. On the Setup Complete page, click Finish.

    Note

    • If you receive the following error, you must restart your computer and then run the SQL Server 2000 SP4 Setup again:

      "Error running script: sp3_serv_uni.sql(1) To exit the service pack installer, click OK."

  14. Ensure the MSSQLSERVER service is started. To do so, click Start, click Run, and then type Services.msc. If the MSSQLSERVER service is not started, right-click the service, and then click Start.

Installing ISA Server 2004

You can install Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004 as your firewall, which requires that your server have at least two network adapters (one to connect to the Internet and one to connect to the local network). You should then install Firewall Client on each client computer.

Important

  • To maintain the current authentication experience for your users, it is highly recommended that you save your existing certificate by exporting it before you begin to set up ISA Server 2004.

  • During the ISA Server installation process, you will need to indicate that you are creating a new certificate. Later, you will import your saved certificate in order to maintain your current authentication experience for your users.

  • Disable any real-time antivirus software that you have running, as it may cause problems while running Setup. Remember to restart you antivirus software after Setup is complete.

To export a certificate

  1. Click Start, click Run, and then type MMC.

  2. Click File, and then click Add/Remove Snap-in.

  3. Click Add.

  4. From the list that appears, select Certificates, and then click Add.

  5. Click Computer Account, and then click Next.

  6. Accept the default of Local Computer, and then click Finish.

  7. Click Close, and then click OK.

  8. Expand Certificates (Local Computer).

  9. Expand Personal.

  10. Expand Certificates.

  11. Maximize the snap-in window, and then write down the expiration date of the certificate that corresponds to your external domain. You will use this date to identify the certificate when you configure ISA Server later.

  12. Right-click the certificate corresponding to your external domain, point to All Tasks, then click Export.

  13. When the Certificate Export Wizard begins, click Next.

  14. Select Yes, export the private key, and then click Next.

  15. Accept the defaults on the Export File Format page, and then click Next.

  16. Enter a password, confirm the password, and then click Next.

  17. Enter a file name for the export file (it will have the extension .pfx), and then click Next.

  18. Write down the entire path and file name of the export file, and then click Finish.

  19. Click OK.

  20. Click File, and then click Exit to close the console.

  21. Click No to not save the console.

To install ISA Server 2004

  1. From the Autorun page of the Premium Technologies disc (D:\Setup.exe, where D is the letter of your CD drive), click Install Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004.

    Note:

    • If Windows Small Business Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 came preinstalled on your server, your original equipment manufacturer (OEM) might have created a shortcut on the desktop for installing the Premium Technologies.

  2. On the Welcome page, click Next.

  3. When the End User License Agreement (EULA) page appears, review the licensing agreement. To continue, you must accept the agreement and click Next.

  4. When the Installation Path page appears, click Next to accept the default installation path.

  5. Click Finish to install and configure ISA Server 2004.

  6. After ISA Server Setup is complete, the Configure E-mail and Internet Connection Wizard appears. You must complete the wizard to properly configure your server to use ISA Server as your firewall. Click Next to begin.

  7. On the Connection Type page, even if you have previously run the wizard, you must select your connection type, and then continue through the wizard to the Firewall page.

  8. On the Firewall page, even if you have previously run the wizard, you must select Enable Firewall.

  9. On the Services Configuration page, select those services that you want to allow through the firewall. If you previously ran the wizard and defined custom services, you can open ICWdetails.htm from \Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\Networking\ICW. Search for the section "Enable Basic Firewall and Remote Access" to see the list of firewall settings that were configured.

  10. On the Web Service Configuration page, select any services that you want to allow through the firewall.

  11. If you allowed access to Web services, the Web Server Certificate page appears.

    • If you have not previously run the wizard, select the type of certificate that you want to use.

    • If you have previously run the wizard, select Create a new Web server certificate, and then enter the same Web server name that was used in your previously existing certificate. Later, you will replace this new certificate with the one that you previously exported.

  12. On the Internet E-mail page, if you previously ran the wizard, select Do not change Internet e-mail configuration, and then complete the wizard.

Your server restarts after the wizard finishes.

If you previously exported your existing certificate, you must now import it and then configure ISA Server Management to use it. To do this, complete the following two procedures.

To import a certificate

  1. Click Start, click Run, and then type MMC.

  2. Click File, and then click Add/Remove Snap-in.

  3. Click Add.

  4. From the list that appears, select Certificates, and then click Add.

  5. Click Computer Account, and then click Next.

  6. Accept the default Local Computer, and then click Finish.

  7. Click Close, and then click OK.

  8. Expand Certificates (Local Computer).

  9. Right-click the Personal folder, point to All Tasks, and then click Import.

  10. When the Certificate Import Wizard appears, click Next.

  11. On the File to Import page, click Browse.

  12. In the Files of Type drop-down box, select Personal Information Exchange (*.pfx,*.p12).

  13. Browse to or type the filename of the .pfx file that you exported previously, and then click Next.

  14. Enter the password you used to export the .pfx file, and then click Next.

  15. Verify that Place all certificates in the following store is selected, verify that the default store is Personal, and then click Next.

  16. Click Finish.

To specify the certificate using ISA Server Management

  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft ISA Server, and then click ISA Server Management.

  2. Expand the console tree and click Firewall Policy.

  3. Click the Toolbox tab in the details pane.

  4. Click the Web Listeners folder.

  5. Right-click SBS Web listener, and then click Properties.

  6. On the SBS Web listener Properties page, click the Preferences tab.

  7. Verify that the Enable SSL check box is selected.

  8. Click the Select button next to the certificate text box.

  9. You will see multiple certificates with the same name. Select the certificate that you just imported, and then click OK.

    Note

    • You can identify the correct certificate by the expiration date that you wrote down when you exported it.

    • Do not select the publishing.yourdomain.local certificate.

  10. Click OK to close the SBS Web listener Properties page.

  11. Click Apply to save your changes and to update the configuration.

Repeat this procedure for SBS CompanyWeb listener, if it exists in the Web Listeners folder.

To start the ISA Server 2004 installation wizard from the command line

Under normal circumstances, ISA Server 2004 is installed from the Premium Technologies disc by clicking the "Install Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2004" link.

However, there are two reasons why you may need to start the ISA Server 2004 installation wizard from the command line:

  1. While installing ISA Server 2004, you receive the following error message:

    “The system cannot validate the product key for Windows Small Business Server 2003. To proceed, you must enter the product key manually. For more information about how to manually enter the product key, see Premiuminstallsteps.htm, which is on the Premium Technologies disc. Look for the section titled "To install ISA Server 2004 via the command line."

    In this instance, the installation of ISA Server 2004 fails because it cannot confirm the validity of the product key used for Windows SBS 2003. ISA Server 2004 Setup requires the product key in order to finish successfully.

    You can start the ISA Server 2004 installation wizard by typing the following syntax at the command prompt:

    where AAAAA-BBBBB-CCCCC-DDDDD-EEEEE (with or without dashes) represents your product key for Windows SBS.

  2. If you want to reinstall ISA Server 2004 by using a configuration file that you saved previously, type the following syntax at the command prompt:

    Sbsisa2k4setup /IMPORTFILE "C:\importfile.xml"
    where C:\importfile.xml represents the name of the configuration file. Make sure you use quotation marks around the name of the configuration file.

You can find Sbsisa2k4setup.exe on the Premium Technologies disc, in the ISASetup folder.

Installing Firewall Client

After you install ISA Server 2004, you must install Firewall Client on each client computer in order to access the Internet.

To install Firewall Client, it is recommended that you create a shared folder for the Firewall Client installation files, and then follow the instructions later in this document to use the Set Up Client Applications Wizard to deploy Firewall Client to each client computer. After completing the installation of all Premium Technologies on your server, create a full backup.

To configure permissions for the Firewall Client shared folder

  1. Using Windows Explorer, browse to \Program Files\Microsoft ISA Server\Clients.

  2. Right-click the Clients shared folder. The share properties dialog box appears.

  3. Click the Security tab, click Add, and then type Domain Users. Click Apply to accept the default permissions assigned.

To add Firewall Client for deployment to client computers

  1. Click Start, and then click Server Management.

  2. In the console tree, double-click Client Computers, and then in the details pane, click Set Up Client Applications.

  3. On the Available applications page, click Add. The Application Information dialog box appears.

  4. In the Application Name box, type Firewall Client, and then in the Location of setup executable for this application box, type \\ServerName\Mspclnt\Setup.exe /v"SERVER_NAME_OR_IP=ServerName ENABLE_AUTO_DETECT=0 REFRESH_WEB_PROXY=1 /qn" where ServerName is the name of your server. There are no spaces within the command except before /v, ENABLE, REFRESH, and /qn.

  5. Follow the instructions to complete the wizard.

  6. When prompted to assign the new application to client computers, click Yes. The Assign Applications Wizard appears.

  7. Follow the instructions to complete the wizard.

    Note

    • The Set Up Client Applications Wizard only works with client computers running Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional and Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional. If you have a client computer running a different operating system, you must connect to the share manually from the client computer. At the client computer, click Start, click Run, and then type \\Servername\Mspclnt\Setup.exe.

      To check the name of your server, click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. The computer name is the first label before the period listed in the Full computer name, for example, servername.smallbusiness.local.

To deploy Firewall Client to the client computer

  1. Have the users log off and then log back on to the client computers. A shortcut to install Firewall Client appears on the desktop.

  2. Double-click the shortcut, and then complete the Firewall Client Wizard. Firewall Client will automatically be configured to connect to the ISA Server on the computer running Windows Small Business Server.

    Important

    • After completing Setup for the Premium Technologies, it is highly recommended that you complete a backup of your server. To do so, use the Backup Configuration Wizard (click Start, click Server Management, and then click Backup).

Install FrontPage 2003

You can install FrontPage 2003 on one computer in your Windows Small Business Server network and then use it to create or modify your Internet Web site.

Important

  • It is recommended that you not install FrontPage on the computer running Windows Small Business Server 2003.

To install FrontPage 2003

  1. Insert the FrontPage 2003 disc into the drive of the computer where you are installing FrontPage.

  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the application.

    Note

    • It is recommended that you host your Internet Web site either on a second server in your network or through your Internet service provider (ISP). However, if you still want the server to host your company's Internet Web site, it is recommended that you see "Hosting Your Business Card Web Site on Windows Small Business Server 2003" on the Windows Small Business Server Web site (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=17117).

SQL Server Collation Settings

It is recommended that you use the default settings for installing SQL Server unless you need to specify collation settings. You must specify a collation setting if you meet one of the following criteria:

  • You are using a business application that depends on settings from a previous version of SQL Server. Check the documentation for your business application to verify which collation settings are required.

  • You must match the Windows locale of another computer, or you must match the collation settings of another instance of SQL Server. If SQL Server is in a language different from the client computers connecting to the database, you must specify a Collation Designator and then select the name of a specific Windows collation from the list. You can then specify a Sort Order option to use with the selected Collation Designator.

  • If you are unsure about which collation settings to use, click Help on the Collation Settings page, and then click Windows Collation Designators. If you are unsure of the sort order, click Windows Collation Sorting Styles in Help.

    To verify the Windows locale of another computer

    1. On the other computer, click Start, click Run, and then type Control to open Control Panel.

    2. Double-click Regional Options (also called Regional Settings or Regional and Language Options). A dialog box appears.

    3. Note whether the locale of the other computer is different from your Windows Small Business Server locale. If the locale differs, use the table in the "Windows Collation Designators" Help file to find the corresponding Collation Designator.

  • The collation settings must match those of another SQL Server installation. To match an earlier version of SQL Server, select SQL Collations (used for backward compatibility with previous versions of SQL Server). The default setting for the locale of your operating system will appear in the collation settings list box.

It is important to consider the following information about collation settings:

  • Many server-to-server activities can fail if the collation settings are not consistent across servers.

  • You can change collation settings after running Setup, but you must rebuild the databases and reload the data.

  • It is recommended that you verify the necessary selections for Collation Designator and Sort Order with the collation settings for the other installation of SQL Server.

To verify collation settings

  1. From the computer that is running SQL Server, open Query Analyzer (click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server, and then click Query Analyzer).

  2. In the Connect to SQL Server dialog box, select the SQL Server for which you want to verify the collation settings, and then specify the authentication information for the connection. A dialog box appears.

  3. In the query pane, type:

    sp_helpsort

    go

  4. Press Ctrl+T to show results in text, and then press F5 to run the commands.

  5. The default collation settings of your server will be displayed in the results pane of the query window.
