You can use this filter to crawl documents that have an .rtf extension so they can be accessed in search results. Before running, the administrator must register the file on the server.

By downloading, installing, and using the code, the user accepts and agrees to the End User Licensing Agreement (EULA).

Installation:

  1. Copy rtffilt.dll to WINNT\System32 on the operating system drive of the computer running SharePoint Portal Server.
  2. To register rtffilt.dll:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
    2. At the command prompt, type Cd /d %windir%\system32, and then press ENTER to navigate to WINNT\System32 on the operating system drive.
    3. Type regsvr32 rtffilt.dll, and then press ENTER.
    4. Click OK to close the message.
    5. Exit Command Prompt.
  3. To restart Microsoft Search (MSSearch) service:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
    2. Right-click Microsoft Search, and then click Restart.
  4. To add the .rtf extension to the list of included file types and start a full update:
    1. In the workspace, open the Management folder, and then open the Content Sources folder.
    2. Double-click Additional Settings.
    3. On the Rules tab, click File Types.
    4. In File types, type rtf, and then click Add.
    5. Click OK, and then click Yes to start a full update.
    6. Click OK to close the Properties page.

You can enable automatic registration of the filter by editing the registry. This allows the Indexing Service (cisvc) to also use rtffilt.dll.

Caution: Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. Before making changes to the registry, you should back up any valued data on the computer.

  1. On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type regedt32, and then click OK.
  3. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, navigate to SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ContentIndex.
  4. Double-click DLLsToRegister.
  5. In the Multi-String Editor dialog box, find the entry for nlhtml.dll.
  6. To add another string, position the insertion point after nlhtml.dll, and then press ENTER.
  7. Type operating_system_drive:\WINNT\System32\rtffilt.dll.
  8. Click OK to close the dialog box.
  9. Close Registry Editor.
  10. To start or restart Indexing Service:
    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
    2. Right-click Indexing Service, and then click Start or Restart.

Usage:

After you install this filter, SharePoint Portal Server crawls and includes .rtf files in the index.
